LA-AFF No Game No Life: Zero

Written by

2017 commemorates the 100th anniversary of anime and what better way to celebrate this major occasion than with Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF). This event took place on September 15-17 at the Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center in downtown Los Angeles and screened a wide array of anime films.

On July 3, 2017, Funimation hosted the world premiere of the live action movie, Tokyo Ghoul, from the hit manga at Anime Expo. Special guest appearances included lead actor Masataka Kubota who plays the role of Ken Kaneki, Director Kentarou Hagiwara, and Producer Tomohiro Nagae. The movie is set to release in Japanese theaters on July 29th, but Anime Expo fans had the exclusive chance to watch the movie before anyone else around the world.

Glad tidings from Anime Expo as a new Cardcaptor series is on its way. Morio Asaka is returning to direct the anime iteration of Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card. Kodansha is bringing the manga to the US, and, while it’s been almost 20 years, the enthusiasm of the fandom has not waned. The OVA deviates from the end of the second Cardcaptor movie in a major way. Sakura’s confession to Syaoran was retconned into nothing, yet hope remains. Touya and Yukito are very much together, and Eriol and Kaho are preparing to head back to England hand in hand. Syaoran gets a call from his mom telling him to return to Hong Kong. Before going back however, Syaoran makes a valiant confession to Sakura who is at a loss to respond.

This year, the highly popular series Fullmetal Alchemist will be celebrating the 16th anniversary of its original manga release which has gone on to sell over 67 million copies worldwide since its inception. Since then, Fullmetal Alchemist has been adapted into a televised anime series, video game, a theatrical animated film, and an upcoming live action film this December. To celebrate the upcoming release director Fumihiko Sori, and actor Ryosuke Yamada, who plays the leading role as Edward Elric, made a special appearance at this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles as part of  the "Hagaren World Bullet Tour."

The US premiere for the Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale was held on March 1st, 2017 at the Grauman’s Egyptian theater in Hollywood California. There was a red carpet event before the movie premiere to which Reki Kawahara (Author of Sword Art Online), abec (Original Illustrator of Sword Art Online Light Novel), Tomohiko Ito (Director of SAO anime/movie), Shingo Adachi (Chief Character Designer of SAO anime series), Kazuma Miki (Editor), and Shinichiro Kashiwada (Aniplex Producer) along with the English voice cast attended. Fans were able to take pictures of the guests and also had a chance to buy exclusive merchandise from the Aniplex store. For the premiere, Aniplex invited cosplayers to dress up as the favorite SAO characters. We found out that work on the English dubbed version of Ordinal Scale is currently underway and Aniplex is planning to have it released on DVD soon. In addition, the complete season 1 blu-ray box set will be available from Aniplex as well, so make sure to add that to your to-buy list! The-O network Online along with several other media outlets got the opportunity to attend a press conference with the production cast before the premiere. Check out the entire Q&A right here first!
