Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Early Impressions

"Good morning Night City!" Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 officially drops on Netflix on October 20, 2026, and while you don’t necessarily need to have watched the first series or played the Cyberpunk 2077 video game to jump in, returning fans will absolutely be thrilled with the fresh content, especially the subtle callbacks to prior events from the first series. Come check out our impression of the latest Cyberpunk entry.

This season begins by diving deeper into cyberpsychosis, the condition where too many cybernetic implants and robotic replacements overwhelm the human mind, triggering violent madness. While the first series centered on David Martinez’s hubris and his tragic belief that he was "built different," Edgerunners 2 reveals that there are many others out there with the capacity to push those same limits. Yet, amidst the chrome and carnage, the heart of the story is human connection. There is also a fascinating underlying theme comparing the death of traditional film media to the rise of Brain Dances (BDs), which allow viewers to see, hear, and feel an experience rather than just passively watch it.

The plot actively shifts gears away from a standard troubled "boy meets girl" story. We meet Roman Carax, a 12-year-old amateur filmmaker documenting the gritty streets, who gets pulled into the dangerous world of the Edgerunners through D. D is a mysterious Netrunner Nomad with burn scars who is seeking revenge for his wiped-out clan. After D saves Roman’s life, he quickly becomes the central focus of the kid’s filmmaking efforts. Watching this dynamic unfold reminded me of the classic Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, where a young Al Izuruha, who shares a similar hobby of filming, meets Bernie Wiseman.

The series wastes no time introducing the rest of its cast. In the first episode, we meet Weak (formerly known as King), a veteran edgerunner who miraculously survived a cyberpsychosis incident. He’s hired by an old associate, Avida, to track down a missing youth, Talia, who’s fallen in with the Maelstrom gang. Talia is dangerously obsessed with replacing her flesh with cybernetic parts. By the third episode, the stakes escalate with the introduction of Capri, a chaotic and mysterious digital entity stored on hardware highly reminiscent of the Relic that held Johnny Silverhand’s engram in the video game. Taking a massive risk, D takes the plunge and plugs himself in, gaining mysterious new powers.

Instead of focusing on a single protagonist like David Martinez, this sequel relies on an ensemble cast whose distinct storylines seamlessly and repeatedly intersect. Many of these characters are crossing paths for the first time, and watching those threads come together is satisfying; however, if there is a minor critique to be made, it is that a few of these newly formed bonds escalate incredibly fast. You might find it a little odd when characters who have only shared fairly brief interactions are suddenly willing to go to extreme, life-threatening lengths to help one another. Additionally, it felt a little odd that Roman's father makes a single, brief appearance early on and is never seen or mentioned again, completely absent while his young son repeatedly stumbles into harrowing situations. Still, the fast-paced, life-or-death nature fits perfectly in the world of Night City.

Fortunately, the overarching pacing this time around feels significantly more manageable. The first season often threw so much at you that it was easy to miss crucial details if you blinked, practically requiring a second viewing. This structural shift is partly thanks to the writing team, including returning producer and writer Bartosz Sztybor and scriptwriter Masahiko Otsuka, who carefully mapped out the multi-character narrative. Director Kai Ikarashi, known for his work as an animation director on series like Little Witch Academia, steps up to helm the series, executing that script with a controlled visual vision that captures the chaos of the Cyberpunk universe while giving the narrative room to breathe.

For hardcore Cyberpunk fans, the story will provide a deeper look into corpo dynamics. D's path to revenge brings him dangerously close to corpo secrets that were never meant to be uncovered, and we finally get to properly explore the inner workings of another major corporation besides Arasaka. It adds a refreshing layer of corporate espionage to the street-level grit.

As expected from Studio Trigger, the art is highly stylized. Featuring character designs by Ichigo Kanno, the series has vibrant, bright colors and a visual flair heavily reminiscent of 90s anime like the original Trigun. Fittingly, the music for the show is composed by Tsuneo Imahori, whose past work includes Trigun. The world continues to feel authentic to the source material, utilizing sound effects and visual UI elements directly from the game.

Weak

Carrying on a neat tradition from the first series, each episode is named after a real song, mirroring the side quest naming scheme of Cyberpunk 2077. But there’s an interesting pivot: while season one leaned on mainstream hits from artists like Michael Jackson, Eminem, and Rihanna, the episode titles for season two pull heavily from indie and underground bands spanning multiple decades and genres.

Overall, the storylines converge into a gripping tale of rescue, desperation, and revenge. It is a show about the great lengths people will go to for their family, whether living or dead. As for the ending, you’ll just need to watch it for yourself. Stating that "there are no happy endings in Night City" is a slogan of the franchise rather than a spoiler, but the specific ways this cast navigates that inevitable decline make the ride entirely worth it.
