If you've frequented social media in the last month, you've probably seen a short video about a girl dancing in front of a deer. Or long video, depending on what you're watching.
And yes, it's part of an actual series.
The Japanese title is "Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan." An easier to pronounce "My Deer Friend Nokotan" is its English title.
This small bit belongs to the anime's opening song "Shikairo Days."
The Japanese deer, also known as the sika deer (where we get the "shika" part of the name), is featured heavily, if only because one of the main characters, Shikanoko Noko (you can even translate it roughly as "deer girl"), is a deer/human hybrid. Koshi Torako, our fully-human protagonist and former delinquent, encounters Shikanoko Noko trapped in some power lines, and proceeds to get way more involved with deer than she ever imagined. Does it make sense? Not really. But it doesn't have to. Just roll with it; it's easier that way.
Here's the cast:
Shikanoko Noko: Megumi Han (Gon in Hunter x Hunter (2011))
Koshi Torako: Saki Fujita (Ymir in Attack on Titan)
Koshi Anko: Rui Tanabe (Nanana in Nanana's Buried Treasure)
Bashame Meme: Fuka Izumi (Utena in Gushing Over Magical Girls)
Nekoyamada Neko: Yurika Kubo
Tanukikouji Kinu: Rio Tsuchiya
Tsubameya Chiharu: Chinatsu Akasaki
Narration: Kosuke Toriumi
Studio WIT, known for its work on Attack on Titan, SPY x FAMILY, and many other series, handles the animation workload.
Broadcast begins on July 7, and for those of you dependent on English, on both Prime Video and Crunchyroll. Japanese streaming service ABEMA will have a four-day head start on all episodes (meaning you can watch as soon as July 3) if you can't wait. I feel there's a bit of a missed opportunity given that Anime Expo is right around the corner for a premiere English screening, but, alas. It will be available in more than one hundred countries worldwide and subbed in English, Spanish, Korean, French, German, Chinese, and more, so you should be able to watch it in something you understand.
Author Oshioshio's original manga of the same name is also available in English both physically and digitally.
