Sometimes, you walk into a demo at PAX West and know you’ve found something special. This year, that game for me was Pragmata. This charming new adventure captivated me from the moment I picked up the controller, blending beautiful visuals with engaging gameplay and introducing an AI companion who is, without a doubt, absolutely adorable. I am beyond excited to share my first impressions!
Visually, Pragmata is absolutely gorgeous. The character models, particularly for the main character and the little AI girl, are incredibly detailed and full of personality. The environments are overflowing with detail, painting a vibrant and enchanting world that truly feels alive. From lush forests to sparkling waterfalls and ancient ruins, every scene is a feast for the eyes, enhanced by stunning lighting that creates a true sense of wonder. And the little AI girl, following you around and reacting to the world? She's pure charm and easily one of the cutest companions I've ever seen in a game and I absolute loved the banter between her and the spacefarer Hugh.

The gameplay, which mainly involves exploration and puzzle-solving, felt incredibly smooth and intuitive. The controls were responsive, allowing me to fluidly traverse the environment, climb walls, and swing across gaps. A core mechanic involves solving puzzles with the help of your AI companion, like using her ability to interact with glowing objects or guiding her through small spaces. These puzzles felt clever and rewarding without being overly frustrating. There’s a nice variety of challenges, from timed sections to environmental manipulation, that kept me engaged throughout the demo. Combat, while present, felt secondary to the exploration, focusing more on tactical dodging and using environmental advantages rather than brute force.

I was blown away by the variety of weapons in the demo, and they all felt incredibly fun to use. First up was the Stasis Gun, which lets you freeze enemies in place so you can get past them or line up a perfect shot. Then there was the Grip Gun, which was my favorite; it fires a sort of claw that can grab and pull enemies towards you, making it super satisfying to pull off a powerful shot. Lastly, the Shockwave Gun was an absolute blast, as it fires a powerful blast of energy that can knock back multiple enemies at once. The weapons are not only amazing to look at, but they add a new layer of strategy to combat.
The final boss was an absolute spectacle and a truly epic conclusion to the demo. It was a massive, hulking machine that combined the game's gorgeous visuals with a terrifying presence, and the fight was an absolute blast. The battle was an intense test of everything I had learned, as I had to use every single weapon in my arsenal. I was blown away by how I had to use the Stasis Gun to freeze its attacks, use the Grip Gun to expose its weak points, and finally send it reeling with a powerful blast from the Shockwave Gun. My adorable little AI companion was also essential to the fight, and I felt a huge sense of accomplishment when we worked together to finally take it down. The whole experience was a super exciting way to end the demo, and it left me absolutely buzzing for the full release.

My demo session flew by, leaving me desperately wanting more. The bond between the main character and the little AI girl is clearly going to be a highlight of the narrative, and I can't wait to see their story unfold. Pragmata promises an epic adventure that combines breathtaking visuals, satisfying gameplay, and an undeniably adorable companion. I’m incredibly excited to experience the full journey when it eventually releases!
