Octopath Traveler 0 (Switch 2) Review

When I first heard about Octopath Traveler 0, I honestly had my doubts. I was almost tired of seeing so many different games in the series—the market felt saturated, and the unique charm of the original was starting to feel diluted. After the seeming disappointment of the mobile title, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, which traded the deep, focused narrative for a gacha-style endless grind, I was ready to move on entirely and perhaps leave the Octopath series behind.

However, after playing nearly 80+ hours of Octopath Traveler 0, I am happy to say that I am not just invested, but heavily re-invested in its world and characters. This title is a welcome return to form, successfully recapturing the magic that made the first game a modern JRPG classic. The core formula—eight disparate narratives woven together by overarching themes—is executed here with a maturity and depth that surprised me. It's a genuine pleasure to jump back into another deep, intricate RPG experience within the Octopath series, one that demands your time and rewards your dedication with both strategic combat and richly developed personal stories.

The story of Octopath Traveler 0 throws you head first into a massive world overflowing with adventure and story. You are cast as a silent protagonist who grows up in Wishvale with your parents and childhood friend, Stia. The narrative kicks off dramatically when your town is suddenly burned down, causing you to lose everything. This event launches your character on an extensive quest to rebuild their lost home and restore peace to the land. The journey takes you across the continent, where you encounter a diverse cast of characters that were extremely well voiced. These interactions are enhanced by excellent voice acting, delivering moments of high drama and scenes that  genuinely kept me on the edge of my seat. The game does a great job at making the protagonist feel like a genuine part of the story and not once did I feel like it was forced.

A highly engaging feature is the emphasis on player choice, allowing you to heavily influence your journey's direction. This non-linear approach makes the game feel less like a set path and much more exciting. Players are rarely penalized for exploring off the beaten path, except when wandering into clearly high-level areas. For example, the first three chapters can be safely played in any order you choose. For those who prefer, the game also offers dual audio, letting you switch between English and Japanese voice tracks which is a nice touch albeit I usually prefer english voice acting in games.

Octopath Traveler 0 incorporates a reputation system based on Power, Fame, and Wealth. Nearly every NPC is interactive, offering some form of reward tied to a sufficiently high level in one of these respective areas. As you complete main story missions and side quests, your level in each area increases, making it easier to recruit specific NPCs to aid you in battle or invite them to your town for resources. While this element initially felt like artificial game length, I ultimately enjoyed the interaction, seeking out every NPC to learn their story, battle them, see their items, or successfully invite them back to my town, reminiscent of games like Animal Crossing as It makes exploring the town and talking to NPCs feel more rewarding.

The visuals are undeniably gorgeous, showcasing the iconic 2D-HD art style. This is complemented by beautifully animated sprite characters and the occasional, yet stunning, hand-drawn art in cutscenes. Battles are particularly impressive, featuring detailed pixel art enemies and awe-inspiring boss designs where they literally tower over the party, creating a sense of dread. Performance on the Switch 2 was generally stable at 60 FPS while playing docked or in portable mode. While frame rate dips occasionally occurred during intense battle moments and overworld movement, they were infrequent and did not significantly impact the overall gameplay experience.

Octopath Traveler 0 offers a huge roster of over 30 playable characters, a massive undertaking for an RPG of this size, and it even incorporates the eight characters from the previous games. Serving as a prequel, the developers meticulously crafted the dialogue for the original characters to ensure it seamlessly connects with the main game's plot. Each recruitable character also comes with their own excellently written mini-quest, which provides meaningful backstory and depth to the original characters, making their motivations in the previous titles much clearer.

Gameplay in Octopath Traveler 0 will feel both recognizable and new to veterans of the series and RPG fans alike. While the protagonist is the sole character capable of switching jobs from a selection of 8 starting options—I primarily focused on Thief, Dancer, and Warrior—the other recruitable characters each have fixed jobs. However, the vast roster of characters available for recruitment ensured that my party composition never felt unbalanced. The introduction of the new job action system significantly enhances customization, allowing for an easy way to combine different abilities across characters, leading to nearly limitless build possibilities.

Transition from a four-person to an eight-person party is a significant mechanical shift that initially feels overwhelming to manage. However, the ability to freely swap characters during battle introduces an exciting level of strategy. Successfully positioning your party is crucial for timing massive, high-damage combos, resulting in a feeling of euphoria or a "runner's high." This intense combat experience is further elevated by the beautiful orchestral score. Despite the complexity of numerous characters, the system remained intuitive; I was encouraged to experiment, and nothing ever felt overly complicated.

Octopath Traveler 0 features an engaging town-building element, central to the narrative, where you must restore and repopulate your town with characters and NPCs encountered on your journey. Initially, I feared this might be a superficial side feature, a mere attempt to capitalize on the "cozy game" trend. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the town-building feels organic and integrates beautifully with the story. In fact, it does lend a certain cozy charm to the game, allowing me to "have my cake and eat it too." Kudos to the developers for this innovative approach.

There are excellent features, notably a convenient salon building that provides on-demand character customization. Equally useful is the central hub, a tavern-like structure where players can purchase essential items and equipment and cook stat-boosting meals. This hub eliminates the need to fast-travel to separate towns for shopping. Furthermore, the game includes a substantial number of customization options, allowing players to change the color of buildings, terrain, and more.

Octopath Traveler 0 is an absolute triumph and a profound love letter to RPG fans, featuring a beautifully rendered HD-2D world and an experience of immense scope. The game masterfully interweaves the compelling, in-depth narratives of its diverse and memorable cast, each with a distinct personality and a deeply moving personal quest. Beyond the narrative, the game excels with its deep systems. Standout customization options allow players to meticulously tailor jobs, skills, and equipment, fostering satisfying strategic depth in every battle. Combat is fresh and rewarding, blending traditional turn-based mechanics with the series' signature "Boost" and "Break" system. A surprising and gratifying element is the seamless integration of town-management, offering persistent progression and a unique sense of ownership as the settlement grows.

It is truly refreshing to see Square Enix elevate what started as a mobile title into such a polished, console-worthy masterpiece. The exceptional quality of the presentation, from the stunning visuals to the breathtaking, fully orchestrated soundtrack, sets a new bar for the genre. I wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend Octopath Traveler 0 to anyone seeking a deeply engaging, strategically rich, and emotionally resonant role-playing game. It is a defining entry that promises a rich narrative and an unforgettable, memorable cast.
