Octopath Traveler 0 - My First Hands-On with the Epic Prequel - PAX West 2025

PAX West 2025 was full of amazing games, but the one that truly blew me away was Octopath Traveler 0. As a massive fan of the series, getting to play a new installment was a long time coming, and I am super excited to report that it's everything I could have hoped for and more. This game isn't just a prequel; it's a massive leap forward for the entire series.

One of the most surprising portion of demo was the farming sim portion. I was so excited to be able to build my very own town, starting from scratch. You can place different buildings and structures on a grid, and it looks just like a custom dollhouse, which is super cool. It's not just for looks, either—you have to manage crops and livestock, and you can even get better materials and yields by exploring and battling. It felt so rewarding to have a home base that I could truly call my own, and it made me feel even more invested in the world. It’s a huge addition that I can't wait to spend hours with in the full game.

There was a wide variety of characters to try out during my demo session each with their own unique abilities and skils. First, there's a character named Ludo, who is a merchant. He has some super cool skills like "Spearhead," which lets him attack with a polearm and act faster on his next turn, and "Appraisals," which helps you see enemy weaknesses. He can even learn support skills that increase the item drop rate, which is a huge benefit for getting better loot! Then there's Zero, who looks like a really versatile attacker with abilities like "Cross Strike" and "Helmcleaver." Phenn has a powerful "Sweeping Gale" ability that can break enemy defenses, and a character named Viacor has a move called "Attack x3" that can also break guards and do a ton of damage. We also see Stia using "First Aid" and a devastating "Full Swing MAX" move, and an unknown character named Alexia using a powerful fire attack. It's so exciting to see how much variety there is, and I can't wait to mix and match all these awesome abilities in the full game.

The final boss of the demo was a truly epic challenge and a perfect showcase of the new combat system! It was a massive creature that looked absolutely incredible in the game's HD-2D style, and the fight was an absolute blast. The battle forced me to use everything I had learned, constantly swapping between my front and back rows of party members to perfectly exploit its weaknesses. I was blown away by the strategic depth—I had to use a specific character's ability to break its shields before bringing in another character to deal massive damage. The sense of accomplishment when we finally defeated it was amazing, and it left me super excited for what other epic encounters the full game has in store.

The classic Octopath Traveler gameplay is here and better than ever, but with a twist. While you start with your created character, the world is filled with a large number of unique party members you can recruit. The possibilities feel endless, and I was genuinely excited to mix and match different jobs and abilities to create my perfect party. This new approach to party members is a huge game-changer, and it adds an incredible layer of strategy and replayability. Octopath Traveler 0 launches on December 4 and I cannot wait to jump back in.
