With Anime Expo right around the corner, I could not even fathom going to another convention. But with the announcement of Fan Expo: Anaheim Special Edition, I just had to check it out for myself. I couldn't be more excited to get a taste of what this convention has to offer with its wide array of guests, panels, cosplay, and, of course, shopping.
Back in 1995, Fan Expo was just a tiny gathering of about 1,500 comic book nerds in Toronto. Fast forward to today, and it has turned into an absolute beast of a cultural phenomenon. What started as a niche local weekend has exploded into the biggest comic con producer on the planet, drawing over a million fans every year across North America. It’s no longer just about comic books, either—whether you’re obsessed with sci-fi, anime, gaming, or just want to show off an incredible cosplay, Fan Expo has become a huge playground for modern fandom. Whether you're hunting down rare collectibles, meeting your favorite Hollywood star, or hitting up a thrilling panel—Fan Expo has it all.
Shopping Experience
The exhibition hall at Fan Expo was packed with a great variety of merchandise spanning numerous genres. Walking through the aisles, I recognized several booths from previous conventions I’ve attended. One standout for me was Misty Mountain Gaming, a booth famous for its high-end custom dice. Getting to view their hololive collaboration series in person was a real highlight of the experience. The Artist Alley featured a healthy mix of small comic book creators and anime pop-culture. It was an enjoyable, approachable space that didn't feel overwhelming to browse, allowing fans to truly appreciate the individual artistry on display.
Shout out to the incredibly talented artist behind the 3D TIE fighter, Chewbaca and Grogu piece! Your attention to detail and ability to bring such iconic Star Wars elements to life in a digital space is truly impressive—it’s the kind of craftsmanship that makes the convention experience unforgettable for fans. Thank you for sharing your passion and skill; you definitely made a lasting impression on everyone who stopped by to see it.

Cosplay Experience
No convention is complete without fans bringing their favorite characters to life, and Fan Expo Anaheim definitely delivered. The convention featured an impressive variety of costumes spanning gaming, anime, and cinema. A major highlight was the dedicated cosplay red carpet area, which acted as a central hub for meetups and hosted a special event where cosplayers could showcase their craftsmanship for the crowd.

Guest of Honor Autograph Experience
The guest lineup was a major draw, headlined by an appearance from Star Wars icon Mark Hamill. The event also featured incredible voice talent, including James Arnold Taylor, known for his work in Final Fantasy X, and Nick Apostolides from the Resident Evil Remake series and the newly released Resident Evil: Requiem. These sessions provided fans with a rare opportunity to hear directly from the voices behind some of pop culture's most beloved characters. Meeting the guests was relatively easy, with manageably short wait times. While autograph prices were steep, ranging from $50 to $100 depending on the guest, many offered beautiful art prints for sale, and most were happy to pose for selfies to capture the moment. There was also lots of room in the area so it did not feel overcrowded which was nice.

Panels
The panel experience was another absolute highlight, featuring a massive central stage right in the heart of the exhibit hall for lively Q&A sessions and guest talk shows. One particular standout for me was an incredible session with several video game voice acting legends. It was a real treat to see favorites like Charlotte Chung, the voice behind D.Va from Overwatch, alongside James Arnold Taylor, iconic for his portrayal of Tidus in Final Fantasy X.

Ultimately, Fan Expo: Anaheim Special Edition served as a nice bite sized convention for those looking for something less overwhelming. Whether you were there to connect with fellow enthusiasts, snag exclusive merchandise, or simply immerse yourself in the creative energy of the cosplay community, the event offered a little bit for everyone and I am generally interested in the future of Fan Expo.
