Master filmmaker Makoto Shinkai never stops working. His previous film, 2019's "Weathering With You," received plenty of acclaim, and the movie before that, 2016's "Your Name," was a global phenomenon. His newest film, "Suzume no Tojimari," will be released later this year.
In the trailer, we can see Suzume (the female lead) traveling through a variety of dilapidated landscapes and buildings. According to Shinkai, "“We must think about how to close the many doors we left open. I’ve bestowed that responsibility upon Suzume as she travels across Japan closing various doors. It is my sincere hope that this film leaves its audiences with big smiles and excitement as they walk out of the theater.” When Suzume finds a door, standing up on its own, she reaches out to it, and it triggers a supernatural event causing portals all across Japan to open. Suzume must now fix it. Portals to other dimensions? Portals to unknown worlds? It's hard to say, but sometimes, doors are closed for a reason.
On the latest poster image, there is the phrase "ittekimasu" to the side. For those of you not versed in Japanese, it is the normal thing to say when leaving home and implies that you'll be back. Suzume is going on a journey, and who knows when it will end.
The movie's direction and script are by Makoto Shinkai. Masayoshi Tanaka (22/7, Anohana, Darling in the Franxx, Weathering With You, Your Name) handles character design. Kenichi Tsuchiya (The Garden of Words, Weathering With You, Your Name) is animation director, and Takumi Tanji (Your Name, 5cm Per Second, Weathering With You) is in charge of art direction. As you can see, all of them have extensive histories and have worked with Shinkai before.
CoMix Wave Films Inc and STORY inc are listed as the production and producing companies, respectively. They have also worked with Shinkai on previous films.
The movie's theatrical release date in Japan has been sent for November 11, 2022.
