The Tokyo International Music Market will again be held online for 2021. This year's event is scheduled for November 1 through November 3.
TIMM is more business-oriented compared to most of the consumer-level events we feature here. This year's themes include utilizing NFT (non-fungible tokens) when it comes to music, music streaming, city pop, and music as a part of other media (movies, TV, video games, et al).
Music streaming in particular has become more and more important in this COVID world. Japan has traditionally been a holdout when it comes to music and the internet, but the necessity of the pandemic has led to a revolution in terms of events. Many concerts and festivals have become accessible through various online streaming hosts. Considering how some of these concerts and festivals are hard to get into (lottery for tickets, small concert venues, and the whole "other side of the world" thing), this is a boon for international fans like myself. This has also allowed Japanese bands and companies to extend their global reach and add new cash flow from those international fans. I'll be doing a rundown for all the featured musical performances in a few days and some brief thoughts about each.
There will be streamed musical performances each night starting from 7 PM JST. TIMM's performance genres are a mix of J-pop, rock, idol, and even virtual performances. This year's schedule is as follows:
Day One: Accusefive / Crispy Camera Club / dreamBoat / Ai Higuchi / Void_Chords feat. LIO
Day Two: KIRAMEKI UNFORENT / Zwei / Tokino Sora / H?G / BiS
Day Three: Singer's High / JiLL-Decoy association / DEPAPEPE / Helsinki Lambda Club / Bleecker Chrome / YUC’e
