Typically, when it comes to fighting games, there is usually not a lot of single-player content to indulge in. With Dead or Alive 6 there is a wide array of different modes, including a massive branching story mode that should keep players occupied for hours. But it's the new DOA Quest mode that shines here, with its task-oriented battles and costume unlocks, that has captivated me. It's a series of mini-sized missions I could play all day.
Hosted by my new favorite character, NiCO the cute blue-haired scientist, DOA Quest revolved around the player fighting a series of missions in order to help with her research to reconfigure a virtual battle simulator.
Each mission is tied to a single battle between two fighters, with three goals for players to accomplish. For example, a player might need to use a specific attack, perform a multi-hit combo or win without losing a round. As you continue to progress more missions will unlock.
If you complete all three goals it awards you with costume points, which are good for unlocking the game's massive wardrobe of outfits and items and among other items, bits of trivia and encyclopedia entries.
DOA Quest is also an amazing learning tool. As you unlock new missions the difficulty of the computer raises and becomes more challenging. If players fail, the challenge gives the option to jump into a convenient tutorial that will teach the player the game's mechanics that they are having trouble with. For me, the hardest challenge was learning a ground attack, which I promptly learned how to do in the tutorial mode and went straight back to DOA Quest to try it again.
Learning new moves and unlocking costumes is very enjoyable and I am excited to see if more fighting games, do things similar to this mode.
