Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind (PS4) Review

Kingdom Hearts III has been one of the most ambitious titles of our decade. With its charming characters, over the top story and its crazy battle mechanics its easily a game I keep coming back to for more. Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind adds so much more to an already epic story while adding in extra game modes and even a few surprises along the way.

The story of Re:Mind takes place right before the Keyblade Graveyard, where Sora fights against the members of Organization XIII. Added dialogue to the cutscenes is a nice breath of fresh air for anyone who has already played through the main game once. However, it does leave a lot to be desired as there is not much in the way of new dialogue. The biggest change is the option to play as Riku, Roxas, Kairi, or Aqua in several fights. These fights are short but are a fun new addition, one that I was hoping would have been in the full game to perhaps flesh out more stories.

Epic Boss Battles

Where ReMind shines, is in its limit cut episodes where Sora will fight each of the Organization XIII members in a brutal 1v1 battle. These are some of the hardest bosses in the and are a nice touch to the game since there was no colosseum mode. I did like that each fight had varied mechanics making each fight unique in its own way and it was quite fun learning the different patterns while fighting the different bosses.

A picture is worth a thousand words

The new Data Greeting is simple to use and is only as difficult as you want to make. This mode allows players to make their own custom screenshots with a litany of different tools, characters, and visual effects. I spent just over a dozen hours playing around with the different settings, trying to find that perfect shot and while there were no Disney characters to use other than Mickey, Donald and Goofy, it was nice to see they had all the other major story characters.

A new way to play

The new premium menu adds a nice challenge to the game being able to take out specific features such as battle items or form changes. There was nothing more satisfying than playing the game in critical mode with even higher risk. It's a nice change of pace from just playing the game on the normal difficulty. This will definitely delight hardcore players looking for a challenge and should a good amount of replay value.

Short but sweet

Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind has been a roller coaster of emotions and while the gameplay and story do leave a lot to be desired, I generally enjoyed what I experienced in this short but sweet DLC campaign. The 14 new bosses were a blast to fight and the Data Greeting feature was adorable. I am super excited about what the future holds for the Kingdom Hearts series and I cannot wait to see more.
