Galbraith Holds Otaku Conference in Ottawa

Otaku scholar, Patrick Galbraith will be be holding a conference at Ottawa University on Friday January 8, 2009 1PM to 5:30PM. The lecture will be a discussion on the otaku movement and will be titled "Onnichan, what does moe mean?" Galbraith will also be presenting the potential, and limits of moe and a little about his book, The Otaku Enclopedia. If you will be in the area, might want to check it out. Otaku Interviews: Patrick Galbraith

Patrick W. Galbraith is the author of the recently published The Otaku Encyclopedia. He is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Tokyo where he is doing his cultural anthropological study on otaku culture, primarily its history and particularly the phenomenon of moé. He is also the tour guide for the "Akihabara Tour", a walking tour for English speaking tourists that visit the otaku Mecca. He is a well known face in the pop-capitol with his iconic cosplay of Super Saiyan Goku from Dragon Ball Z. In combination with a review of his latest book, we interviewed Mr. Galbraith on his life and thoughts on otaku culture.

The Otaku Encyclopedia Review

Who here is sick and tired of reading about Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Neon Genesis Evangelion in academic or fan literature? I certainly am, there's a world after Eva, and there are things in Japanese culture that can be appreciated that don't have ninjas. Well, for those of you who don't know what moe is, or have no idea what shokushu-kei is, there is The Otaku Encyclopedia by Patrick Galbraith (the guy with the DBZ hair, you might have seen him before on various websites.
